Clay Shooting
Welcome to the Clay Shooting section
Intro to the club:
The Clay Club is open to all members of the Sports and Social Club who currently possess a shotgun/firearms license. Everyone involved in this club has a love for the sport and we look to create a friendly, warm and welcoming environment for all levels.
Whilst we are a sports and social club section we would also welcome Guest / Non S&SC members by invitation only, however; they will be charged a non member rate. Our aim is to build and grow the club so if you are interested in coming along to see what we're about, come and meet us ,please feel free to pop along to any of our events detailed below.
We are currently unable to allow non license holders to shoot at our Wicklewood ground and are in the process of applying for an exception to allow us to have you join us. Once we get this granted it means if you want to come and have a go you can come to any of our nights. Until this is granted we'd only be allowed to let you attend events at the commercial shoot locations such as MNSG and Eriswell. Even if you have no equipment then don't fret, we have a club gun which can be used along with cartridges and PPE available to purchase. We just ask you to please let us know if you wish to attend any of our events and would like to use this club gun.
We offer shoots to suit all abilities from the seasoned professional to the novice shooter.
We have access to 3 different shooting grounds all with their own great benefits. We host 3 Cup competitions each year in county and have the opportunity (COVID pending) to be able to travel to other counties and take part in their PSUK rounds. This is also a great opportunity to go to different shooting grounds for the experience along with National Championships which take place in Sept each year over 3 days.
Our away days are subject to being subsidised by the SSC (funds pending) and we are working on building relationships with local gun clubs to have inter club competitions at their grounds and at Wicklewood.
Our Facilities:
We are extremely fortunate that within Norfolk we have such great open spaces right on our doorstep. We live in a rural community where shooting is a sport many people participate in, and the facilities we have available to the club are so versatile and custom built.
Aside from the public gun clubs in our area such as Mid Norfolk Shooting Club (Taverham) and Eriswell Lodge (Lakenheath), we also have our very own ground in Wicklewood. This venue is a fabulous meadow which we have access to host our very own shoot’s. This venue is ideal with the current COVID-19 pandemic as we have full control over how our shoots are run and means we can put all the necessary controls in place to make sure we are all safe whilst having a good time. NB. This venue is a Fibre Wad ONLY ground.
We have a stock of 20g and 12g cartridges, PPE (glasses, ear plugs) available to purchase should you need to restock or replenish.
As a club we also have a number of passes for Mid Norfolk Shooting Ground which will allow our members to shoot there at a discounted rate.
Eriswell Lodge is a family owned clay shooting ground set in 100 acres of beautiful Suffolk countryside. Friendly and welcoming, the best Suffolk can offer as described on their website. This venue has had a lot of investment put into it over the last few years and can offer some of the most modern setup’s around offering English Sporting, Skeet, Down the Line (DTL) and plenty of other combinations.
Eriswell Lodge has kindly offered their membership rates to our members of the NCSSC on production of you SSC Card and Photo ID. NB. Your Warrant Card is NOT permitted to be shown/used.

Norfolk Cup Competitions
TBC – Norfolk ‘Skeet’ Cup
TBC – Norfolk ‘Down the Line’ Cup
TBC – Norfolk ‘Sporting’ Cup
Down the Line (DTL)
The traditional DTL shooting layout is set up with 5 stands in a crescent shape 16 yards from a traphouse, which throws a random target from an oscillating trap. The clay should always be on a common trajectory for height, even though it is variable in horizontal angle.
A normal competition would have the competitor shooting at 100 targets in total in a day. This would be built up of 25 targets at 4 different layouts (traps) with 5 targets shot on each stand rotating on a 1 > 2 >>> 5 basis, hence 100 targets total.
The competition is shot in 'squads' of a maximum of 5 shooters occupying the 5 stands which are also called pegs. These squads are not usually teams as such, but groups of individual shooters shooting in turn i.e. Competitor 1 on peg 1 shoots 1 target; then competitor 2 on peg 2; etc. until each has shot 5 targets from each peg. They then move one peg to the right before shooting a further 5 shots in turn from that peg and so on until 5 shots have been taken from all 5 pegs, the 25 targets on that layout (aka trap).
DTL is perhaps the 'easier' single shot to make of any clay shooting discipline, but the result is an incredibly high standard of competition. Even a small club shoot will see almost perfect scores posted by the better shots, so concentration and mental strength are the real talents displayed by competitors.
Skeet
English Skeet is a game of relatively close-range crossing targets, presented from a higher tower on the left of the range and a lower tower on the right. English Skeet shooters take it in turns to shoot from eight different positions set in a semi circle. There is a set sequence of targets which includes double simultaneous birds in the air from both towers, crossing in the air in front of the shooter
Sporting
Sporting clays is a form of clay pigeon shooting, often described as "golf with a shotgun" because a typical course includes from 10 to 15 different shooting stations laid out over natural terrain. Unlike trap and skeet, which are games of repeatable target presentations, sporting clays simulates the unpredictability of live-quarry shooting, offering a great variety of trajectories, angles, speeds, elevations, distances, and target sizes
